CRIS Family Services

At Collegiate Recovery and Intervention, we understand that substance misuse issues effect the family system significantly.  We also believe our students have the best chance of recovery when they have family support and understanding.  Given the significant importance of family involvement in the recovery process, we provide family services at different levels and frequencies across all of our programs and initiatives.

Our department offers students and their families the following services to assist in the development and maintenance of a healthy family system:

  • Family counseling sessions
  • Phone consultations with concerned family members
  • Student progress updates with parents/family (if applicable)
  • Educational group counseling on family and relationship concerns
  • Family outreach and engagement events

We look forward to assisting students and their families in achieving wellness and recovery.

Support Groups

Attending Family Support Groups such as Al-anon and Nar-anon as well as other related meetings are an important part of the recovery process for the entire family. You can find these meetings in your local communities through looking up their websites (for example, Alanon meetings can be found on the Al-Anon website).  It is recommended you attend several different meetings at different locations and times to find the best fit for you. Families that thrive in recovery find that regular meeting attendance is helpful.

If you determine that your family may need support in addition to meetings please contact us at 205-348-2727 and we will get you in touch with a therapist who can assist you.

Family Weekends

About once a year, Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services hosts weekend programming to support the families of our Collegiate Recovery Community.  The Family weekend takes different forms depending upon needs of families and current trends.  It is common for our Family Weekend Program to include education, a family sharing their journey and “family recovery”, and some combined programs or groups with their student.  We believe that families benefit from “quality time” in recovery.
