At Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services (CRIS), we believe every student deserves the opportunity to thrive—in their education, their well-being, and their recovery. Through scholarships, donations, and fundraising efforts, we’re able to provide the resources and support students need to succeed academically while maintaining a strong foundation for long-term recovery.
When you give to CRIS, you’re not just supporting a program—you’re investing in lives, futures, and the belief that recovery is possible and worth celebrating. Your support helps us:
- Provide scholarships to students in recovery who face financial challenges
- Expand access to counseling, recovery coaching, and mental health services
- Offer sober social events, peer-led groups, and community-building opportunities
- Promote prevention and education across campus through outreach initiatives
- Create a welcoming, stigma-free environment for all students

Support Our Scholarships
Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services is supported by a variety of scholarships and endowments. Below you will find scholarship descriptions as well as links and steps for giving.
Martin J. Stovall Promises Scholarship
The Martin J. Stovall Promises Scholarship (The Promises Scholarship) was established Fall 2018 in honor of Martin J. Stovall, a University of Alabama (UA) student who succumbed to the disease of addiction in 2016. The Promises scholarship was initiated by a UA CRC student to honor the life of his friend. The goal of The Promises Scholarship is to ease the financial barrier for re-entry to college and afford a student in early recovery the opportunity to attend UA, maintain their sobriety through participation in the UA Collegiate Recovery Community and obtain a degree. Preference should be given to those who need financial support in order to attend UA, those that show a strong desire to receive an education, and those that have established goals that emphasize recovery, community and academics.

Fundraising plays a vital role in helping Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services (CRIS) provide life-changing support to students navigating substance use recovery and co-occurring mental health challenges. Through generous contributions from individuals, families, campus partners, and the wider community, CRIS is able to expand access to essential resources, programs, and services that foster long-term wellness and academic success.
An Evening with Scott Cochran

In April 2025, Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services hosted former University of Alabama strength coach and now University of West Alabama head coach Scott Cochran for a powerful session at Doster Hall. Scott Cochran shared his candid story of battling opioid addiction and finding recovery— leaving a profound impact on students. Cochran also shared his story again with campus and community partners at a private event to raise financial support for CRIS through the Ray and Kathy Hayes Family Endowment and The Martin J. Stovall Promises Scholarship Endowment. Thanks to the generosity from donors and many sponsors, the event raised over $20,000 for students involved with collegiate recovery at UA. CRIS hopes to continue hosting events like these to support our students and spread awareness.
